When a Course Becomes Difficult

It happens to the best of us... You sit and listen to the lecture, you do the homework, but you still feel lost. It may feel like the end of the world - it's not! You can get back on track, but you're going to need some tools to handle the process. Learn how to self-assess your class performance, how to reset your course direction, and what resources are available on campus to help you recover. We'll help you get back to the academic success you want to see!

Successful Note-taking

College is about learning many different things. How can someone keep all of these things straight and retain them for use later? That's where notetaking comes in. There are many different styles and kinds of notetaking, something for every kind of person. In this workshop, we'll talk about and practice a little mock example of a couple of them, a little sample of the many different ways to look at notes for you to try yourself out in the wild.

Timely Time Management

Life is hard. There's a lot going on, and so many things can be hard to keep track of. Let's sit down for a spell and get all of this on track. We'll brainstorm many items that are key to our lives and prioritize what how time bounded and demanding each item is. From there, we can organize and track everything both on a small, weekly scale, and globally on the rest of the semester. We'll look back on what we've accomplished so far and use it to plan out big projects, gaining a view of our limits and how much time we need to complete tasks. Besides, who can say no to coloring?

Successful Learning Strategies

This is the second workshop of the Learning Strategies series, which begins with How Do I Learn? and concludes with Bridging the Gap: To Better Learning.  While we suggest you go through all three in the appropriate order, we have built these workshops so you can go through each one individually. In this workshop, you will learn about Bloom's Taxonomy and the different levels of learning within it. Participants will be asked to reflect on their own learning, what kinds of learning happens in their classroom, and what kinds of learning they are most comfortable with.

Managing College Communications

Email and Blackboard and BANNER, Oh My! GCC uses a variety of communication tools, sometimes interchangeably and sometimes not. This quick workshop for new students will assist in straightening out the communications spaghetti. We'll cover the major online tools, how to find what you're looking for, and which tool is right for which situation. The next time your professor offhandedly notes that this information is "available online," you'll know exactly where to go!

Soft Math, Warm Math

Games, quizzes, fun activities – who doesn't like to have fun while learning? Soft Math, Warm Math is a powerful series of math activities aimed at providing you, the GCC math student, with additional support while enrolled in any entry-level GCC math course.
